Coastal Landscapes and Nursery has its roots in owner, Tom Underhill’s. Tom’s early childhood fascination with and love of plants. At age 12, Tom sold his motorcycle to buy a greenhouse. Over the next several years, Tom experimented with propagating and growing a variety of plants while gaining knowledge of the nursery business working at Bayside Nursery and then at McDonald’s Garden Center.

In 1987, at age 20, Tom decided to venture out on his own and started what has become Coastal Landscapes and Nursery. Tom had noticed a lack of mature healthy plants that were affordable for the average homeowner and set out to remedy that. This, in conjunction with his growing interest in and burgeoning talent for landscape design were the catalysts for the evolution of what began as small nursery selling trees and bushes to homeowners and landscapers to a full service landscape design/build company and nursery.

When Tom bought the original house and 1 acre in Pungo in 1987, his goal was to grow healthy plants for him to use on his landscape installs and have enough left over to sell to local homeowners at affordable prices. The 18 acres that is now Coastal Landscapes Nursery is home to a huge variety of trees and shrubs. We grow the vast majority of our plant material on our nursery which allows us to offer pricing that appeals to the value-minded consumer. Our niche is the wide variety of plant species we grow that are acclimated to our area and our unique climate and weather conditions. We specialize in salt tolerant varieties, plants that stand up to strong winds and trees and shrubs that can survive the temperature extremes in this area. We have an abundance of larger potted and field grown trees for “instant gratification” if customers are seeking shade or privacy screening.
